The Tattoo Represents Scottish Culture at NYC Tartan Week
The Tattoo brings Scottish culture to an international stage at NYC Tartan Week 2026, performing alongside Sam Heughan at the Tartan Day Parade.
We’re back on the bustling streets of New York this week, bringing the Tattoo, Scotland’s largest celebration of traditional performing arts, to the world’s biggest Scottish cultural event outside the country: New York City (NYC) Tartan Week.
What is the history of NYC Tartan Week?
Twenty-seven years ago, in 1999, two pipe bands marched through the streets of New York City to celebrate Scottish culture, music and heritage. The parade was led by renowned actor Cliff Robertson, who served as Grand Marshal.
This event, known as the Tartan Day Parade, also provided an opportunity to highlight the contributions Scottish people have made to American culture.
At the time, only a small crowd gathered to support the parade. Today, crowds of up to 20,000 people come together to celebrate the Tartan Day Parade, which will take place this Saturday, 11 April, starting at 1pm (EDT).
What began as a single day shining a light on Scottish culture with a small group of people has now grown into a full week of celebration, known as NYC Tartan Week.
How is the Tattoo taking part in NYC Tartan Week 2026?
We have a jam-packed week ahead as we build new connections and strengthen relationships from last year’s visit.
Our Tattoo performers will be appearing across the city at a range of standout venues, helping to build excitement and support for Tartan Week ahead of the big parade on Saturday. Locations include:
- Madison Square Garden
- Bryant Park
- Great Jones Distillery
- And many more
We’re also proud to support and be led by Scottish actor Sam Heughan, who is the Grand Marshal for this year’s Tartan Day Parade.
Sam is a friend of ours who visited The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo last year for The Heroes Who Made Us Show, and we’re honoured to march with him to celebrate Scottish culture and heritage on an international stage.
If you’re unable to see us in New York this week or weekend, don’t worry. Tickets are still available for this year’s production, A Call to Gather.
