The Tattoo Makes Its March at the NYC Tartan Day Parade

The day before the big parade, we played the pipes, banged the drums and danced in Bryant Park to represent Scotland and kick-start the NYC Tartan Day Parade celebrations, building excitement and drawing crowds ahead of the main event on Saturday 11 April.

It was a proud moment for us to represent Scotland and help mark the beginning of the celebrations, raising spirits and encouraging spectators to return and join the crowds the following day to cheer on participants at the NYC Tartan Day Parade at 2pm.

The Tartan Day Parade Puts Scotland on the Map

An even prouder moment was seeing Scotland, and those with Scottish origins, show up in their thousands, with participants from across the United States and from Scotland itself taking part in the Parade.

The celebration showcased Scottish culture and the significant contribution Scottish immigrants have made in shaping and positively influencing communities across America, particularly in New York City.

We were honoured to follow Sam Heughan, the Grand Marshal of the parade, as crowds of over 20,000 cheered us on. There were also some familiar faces participating alongside the Tattoo, including the Lord Provost of Edinburgh, Councillor Robert Aldridge.

The parade began on West 45th Street and marched along Sixth Avenue, also known as the “Avenue of the Americas.” This famous street was named in honour of the many communities who have immigrated to the United States from around the world, making it a fitting route for such a celebration. The march finished on West 55th Street, an area known for its arts and culture.

As Scotland’s largest celebration of traditional arts, being able to play our part in representing our music, dance and heritage on an international stage, and putting Scotland on the map, was nothing short of spectacular.

One of our Tattoo Fiddler’s Emma Leask, said:

Taking part in NYC Tartan Week with the Tattoo was a truly special experience where we got to explore NYC, doing the things we love! It was great to celebrate Scotland in such an incredible city.

Walking in the parade felt totally surreal in the best way. I mean what an experience to March down closed off streets in NYC in front of cheering crowds!
