A Royal Event

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo has been privileged to mark many Royal occasions over the years. This August, we will continue the tradition, paying tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the historic Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III.

Tomorrow marks a poignant moment in history for the United Kingdom, with the Coronation of His Majesty The King taking place at Westminster Abbey.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at the Tattoo in 2002

Since our inaugural Show back in 1950, which was attended by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, and Her Royal Highness Princess Margaret, we have been proud to welcome many Royal faces over the years.

In 2002, our Show celebrated the Golden Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. That August, we were honoured to welcome Her Majesty to our event in person. Later, in 2010, Her Majesty honoured us further by bestowing our Royal title. Previously known as The Edinburgh Military Tattoo, we became The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

Another milestone in the Tattoo history happened in 2006, when Her Royal Highness Princess Anne became our Patron. She has visited our event a number of times over the years, most recently in 2022 when she attended rehearsals at Redford Barracks to meet members of our Voices cast.

We also had the honour of welcoming His Majesty King Charles III in 2017, when he attended alongside His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, who both joined us for our Splash of Tartan Show.

As well as hosting Royal guests, our Show has marked key celebrations within the Royal calendar. These have included Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee (1977), Golden Jubilee (2002) and Diamond Jubilee (2012). The Golden Wedding Anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness Prince Philip in 1997, as well as the 100th birthday of Her Majesty The Queen Mother in 2000.

This August, we will mark another milestone with reference to the passing of our beloved Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the historic Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III. Make sure to keep your eyes on the Castle during our Stories finale.

To mark the upcoming Coronation, we have recently launched our Coronation retail range. The design features the official Coronation Emblem created by Sir Jony Ive. The emblem includes the flora of the four nations of the United Kingdom: the rose for England, the thistle for Scotland, the daffodil for Wales and the shamrock for Northern Ireland.

These natural forms combine to describe St Edward’s Crown, used for the coronation of British monarchs. Browse the collection here.
