20 Years of Musical Military Heritage
In 2025, The Royal Regiment of Scotland marked its 20th anniversary with a new pipe music book celebrating the music of the last two decades for the regiment. And Pipe Major Joe Davies was one of the brains behind the new collection.
The landmark publication is ensuring the Regiment’s rich musical heritage will be preserved for generations to come. Much like the Tattoo celebrates history, heritage and culture and ensures it lives on for many more years to come.
You might just recognise the man who has led the creation of the Regiment’s first-ever official Pipe Music Collection, 2SCOTS Pipe Major (PM) Joe Davies, as he has appeared on our A Call To Gather campaign.
PM Davies, along with others, helped bring together an extensive archive of regimental and battalion tunes in a single volume. The publication celebrates two decades of The Royal Regiment of Scotland while honouring more than 300 years of Scottish military tradition inherited from its antecedent regiments.
Speaking about the project, PM Davies described the book as a labour of love that required years of research, collaboration and careful editing. Drawing together music from across the Regiment’s battalions, the process involved sourcing historic manuscripts, verifying settings and ensuring each tune reflected the traditions and identity of the Regiment.
“The aim was to create something that would preserve our musical heritage,” he explained, highlighting the importance of safeguarding the music that has accompanied soldiers on parade, ceremonial duties and operations throughout the Regiment’s history.
More than a collection of tunes, the book captures the story of The Royal Regiment of Scotland through music, photographs and the contributions of pipers and drummers who have served over the past two decades. The result is a lasting record, and tribute to the musicians, of the Regiment’s unique identity and the enduring role of its Pipes and Drums.
