Frequently asked questions about the Tattoo

Here are some frequently asked questions.

What are the dates of the 2018 Tattoo?

The 2018 Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo will take place over the period 3-25 August with performances on Monday to Friday at 9.00pm and on Saturday at 7.30pm and 10.30pm.  There is no performance on Sunday.

What are the future dates for the Tattoo?

How long does each performance last?

Each performance lasts for approximately 100 minutes.

Is the performance the same each evening?

The programme is subject to alternation

Subject to the appropriate weather conditions, all performances will conclude with a fireworks display.  Saturday performances at 10.30pm will conclude with an extended fireworks display.

Where is the Box Office located?

The Tattoo Box Office is located at 1 Cockburn Street, Edinburgh - just behind Waverley Railway Station and a ten minute walk from the Castle Esplanade (the Tattoo venue)  

On performance days the office is open from 10.00am until the start of the performance.  Outwith the Tattoo period, office hours are Monday to Wednesday and Friday 10.00am to 4.30pm and Thursday 11.00am to 4.30pm.  

What happens if my tickets are lost/stolen?

If I can no longer attend, can I get a full refund?

Tickets may not be exchanged nor money refunded after purchase. If tickets are returned to the Tattoo Office prior to the date of performance we will attempt to resell such tickets on your behalf subject to the deduction of an administration fee. Such re-sale is not guaranteed and we shall not be liable for any refund if tickets remain unsold.  Tickets will be offered for resale only when all Tattoo tickets have been sold and any refund due will be made within seven days of the date of the performance.

Do children pay full price?

Children of three years and under are admitted free of charge providing they remain seated on an adult's lap. Children of four years and over pay full price.

What facilities exist for disabled patrons?

What happens if it rains?

No performance of the Tattoo has ever been cancelled. 

In the event of inclement weather, rapmacs are available for purchase from the souvenir kiosk on the Castle Esplanade.  Umbrellas are not permitted.    

Is photography permitted?

Photographs may be taken but should not be used for purposes of commercial gain.  The use of "flash" equipment is expressly forbidden.

In large arenas such as the Castle Esplanade flashlight is totally ineffective.  The floodlighting used during the Tattoo performance can produce satisfactory photographic results when using a suitable camera with appropriate shutter and lens aperture adjustments.  Any auto-flash settings should be switched off.  An ISO speed setting of 400 or 800 ISO is recommended on digital or film cameras with the colour balance set for artificial lighting if possible.    

What are the opening hours of the Tattoo Office?

From September to July the office is open Monday to Wednesday and Friday 10.00am to 4.30pm and Thursday 11.00am to 4.30pm.

On performance days the office is open from 10.00am until the start of the performance, except on the date of the final performance when the office will close at 10.00pm.   

Are there fireworks after every performance?

Subject to the appropriate weather conditions, all performances will conclude with a fireworks display. 

Performances on Saturday at 10.30pm conclude with an extended fireworks display.
