Act as the welcoming ‘face’ of The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, Ushers provide customer care services for all customers attending the Tattoo on the Esplanade of Edinburgh Castle. Specific duties include ensuring that tickets are checked, and that the audience are able to find their way to their seats and locate facilities on site; and assisting members of the public in the event of an emergency. Training will be provided.

About the Tattoo

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is a world-class event, rooted in Scottish tradition, offering audiences an experience like no other. Performed to a live audience of 220,000 each year on the iconic esplanade of Edinburgh Castle, the Tattoo showcases creativity through music, precision performances and dance from military and cultural acts from around the globe.

The success of the Tattoo relies on the connection of performers, staff, and audiences and this enables us to contribute to Services and Arts charities each year. We’re looking for enthusiastic, passionate, and personable people to work with us and join our world-class team.


This is a temporary position from 4-28 August 2021. A normal working week is one of 30 hours although, the successful candidate may be required to work hours in excess of this. These hours are arranged between 1830-2300 hours daily Monday to Friday and 1730-0030 on Saturday. You will be on duty every performance night (there is no performance on Sunday).

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Carry out pre-event safety checks within designated areas of responsibility (AoR), ensuring that all safety equipment is in place and there are no hazards.

• Understand the health & safety plan and your role in it to ensure the safety of the audience, staff, and yourself (including those with additional needs and children).

• Be familiar with the layout of the site and assist the audience by providing information and guidance on facilities including: first aid, toilets, water, welfare, and facilities for people with special needs.

• Oversee entrances, exits and other strategic points while the event is in progress.

• Provide clear and friendly advice to the audience entering or leaving the event, thereby

helping achieve an even flow of people in and from various parts of the venue.

• Recognise crowd conditions and be confident in the delivery of clear direction to ensure the safe dispersal of the audience to prevent overcrowding.

• Assist in the safe operation of the event by keeping gangway and exits clear at all times and preventing standing on seats and furniture.

• Investigate disturbances or incidents, reporting details to your supervisors.

• Ensure combustible refuse does not accumulate around the stands.

• Be familiar with arrangements for evacuating the audience, including coded messages, and undertaking specific duties in an emergency.

• Respond to emergencies (such as early stages of a fire), raising the alarm and taking the necessary immediate action.

• Communicate with Event Control in the event of an emergency.

• Be polite, welcoming, and friendly and ready to aid the audience where appropriate.

• Present a positive impression of the company and uphold our values in all activity.

• Awareness of Tattoo COVID-safety procedures.

• Look after all documentation and equipment issued to you for the purpose of carrying out your duties.

• Follow, and ensure compliance by others, of COVID-19 procedures.

• Assist with the implementation of COVID-19 procedures.

Essential Skills/Characteristics/ Qualification

• Excellent communication skills.

• Written and verbal literacy.

• Approachable and helpful.

• A positive attitude.

Desirable Skills/Characteristics/ Qualification

• Experience in theatre or other entertainment venues.

• Experience in a customer care environment or public facing role.

• Foreign language skills.

• First Aid.

• Security Industry Authority licence holder.
