Acting as the welcoming ‘face’ of The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the Stewards provide customer care services for all customers attending the Tattoo on the Esplanade of Edinburgh Castle; ensuring that customers are guided safely through queue and security checks and that the Event perimeter is maintained. To provide support and assistance to members of the Public and services in the event of an emergency (training to be provided).

About the Tattoo

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is a world-class event, rooted in Scottish tradition, offering audiences an experience like no other. Performed to a live audience of 220,000 each year on the iconic esplanade of Edinburgh Castle, the Tattoo showcases creativity through music, precision performances and dance from military and cultural acts from around the globe.

The success of the Tattoo relies on the connection of performers, staff, and audiences and this enables us to contribute to Services and Arts charities each year. We’re looking for enthusiastic, passionate, and personable people to work with us and join our world-class team.


This is a temporary position with roles starting from 27 July, 1 August, or 4 August -27 August 2022. A normal working week is 35 hours, although chosen candidates may be required to work hours in excess of this. These hours are arranged between 1730-2330 hours daily Monday to Friday and 1630-0000 hours on Saturday. You will be on duty every performance night (there is no performance on Sunday).

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Put in place and manage road closures and queue management systems.

• Carry out pre-event safety checks in designated area, ensuring that all safety equipment is in place and there are no hazards.

• Understand responsibilities towards the health & safety of all categories of audience

(including those with additional needs and children), other staff and themselves.

• Be familiar with the layout of the site and assist the audience by giving information about the available facilities including first aid, toilets, water, welfare, and facilities for people with additional needs.

• Oversee entrances, exits, and other strategic points which are not continuously secured in the open position while the Event is in progress.

• Control or direct the audience who are entering or leaving the Event, to help achieve an even flow of people into and from various parts of the venue.

• Recognise crowd conditions to ensure the safe dispersal of audience and the prevention of overcrowding.

• Assist in the safe operation of the Event by keeping gangways and exits clear at all times and preventing standing on seats and furniture.

• Investigate any disturbances or incidents, reporting any issues to supervisors. • Ensure combustible refuse does not accumulate.

• Be familiar with the arrangements for evacuating the audience and undertaking specific duties in an emergency.

• Respond to emergencies (such as early stages of a fire), raising the alarm and taking the necessary immediate action.

• Communicate with Event Control in the event of an emergency.

• Be polite, welcoming, and friendly and ready to offer assistance to the audience at all times.

• Present a positive impression of the company and uphold our values in all activity.

• Safety awareness of Tattoo COVID procedures.

• Assist with COVID-19 safety protocols as required.

• Look after all documentation and equipment issued to you for the purpose of carrying out your duties.

• Experience in theatre or other entertainment venues.

• Experience in a customer care environment or public facing role.

• Foreign language skills.

• Over 18 years of age to comply with licence requirements.

• Security Industry Authority licence holder
