Musicians from Switzerland, Norway and Australia will be among the sparkling line-up at next summer’s 62nd Tattoo, which opens at Edinburgh Castle on August 3rd and runs for three weeks.

As part of next year’s international celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty The Queen’s accession to the throne, the Tattoo’s Diamond Jubilee themed production is Scotland’s Salute to the Monarch and is set to be one of the most impressive ever staged.

Stirring music, breathtaking action, mesmerising spectacle and an incomparable atmosphere. This is in store at this year’s Edinburgh Tattoo (5-27 August). As ever, staged against the famous backcloth of Edinburgh Castle, the show focuses on the theme ‘Of the Sea’ while celebrating key anniversaries and Scotland’s remarkable engineering pedigree. The new Tattoo Chief Executive & Producer, Brigadier David Allfrey, takes the event’s helm.

Forty of the Netherlands’ finest military musicians with their celebrated Bicycle Band – Fanfarekorps Koninklijke Landmacht Bereden Wapens – resplendent in historic World War 1 period uniform are one of the more unusual elements set to grace the Esplanade of Edinburgh at next year’s Royal Edinburgh Tattoo (5-27 August).

The entertaining spectacle of members of The Fanfare Band of The Royal Netherlands Army Mounted Regiments in action on their pushbikes is expected to fascinate and amaze visitors to the showpiece military event.

'60 Years On'

The Tattoo’s Diamond Anniversary

Over 1000 performers from the Army, this year’s lead service, along with a wealth of talent from around the world will join forces to stage a spectacular 60th Anniversary programme of music, song, dance and drama at this year’s Diamond Jubilee Tattoo on the Esplanade of Edinburgh Castle from August 6-28.

At 9.15am on Wednesday, January 13 at Crown Square within Edinburgh Castle, Scotland’s Culture Minister, Fiona Hyslop MSP will personally offer performers from the Tattoo’s Scottish contingent bound for Australia her best wishes as they put the finishing touches to their preparations for the Edinburgh Tattoo’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations Down Under at Sydney’s Football Stadium from 3-7 February 2010.

Her Majesty The Queen has graciously conferred a ‘Royal’ title upon The Edinburgh Military Tattoo, which recognises its six decades of sterling service to culture and entertainment.  From January 4th the military spectacle will be named The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

Minister for Culture and External Affairs, Fiona Hyslop MSP today announced that the Scottish Government and Scottish Enterprise have agreed to help part-fund the Edinburgh Tattoo’s £16 million Castle Esplanade replacement grandstand project to the tune of £3 million.

Culture Minister, Fiona Hyslop MSP said: “Edinburgh's spectacular and world-renowned Military Tattoo, set against the backdrop of Edinburgh Castle, raises the international profile of Scotland, showcasing our creative talent and bringing significant economic benefits to the Capital and Scotland as a whole.

Next week the Edinburgh Tattoo is set to launch a television advertising campaign across central Scotland featuring the voice work of Hollywood super-star Sir Sean Connery.

The TV commercial, inspired to support the sale of this year’s Tattoo DVD, shows a series of fast-moving clips from this summer’s hugely popular Castle Esplanade production and the almost instantly recognisable gravel voice of the 79-year-old Scottish movie star.

George Square in the heart of Glasgow’s cosmopolitan city centre will tomorrow come alive to the mellifluous sounds of the South Sea Islands as Tonga’s Royal Corps of Musicians together with a top multi-national cast from the Scottish Capital’s showpiece military event present the first of four free nationwide ‘Taste of the Tattoo’ performances from this summer’s sold-out 60th Edinburgh Tattoo (until 29th August).
