The story of Tattoo Tartan
The first Edinburgh Military Tattoo tartan was created in 1983. In 1998 the then producer, Brigadier Mel Jameson and the Tattoo Board of Directors took a decision to mark the 50th anniversary of the Tattoo by designing a Jubilee tartan.
In conjunction with one of Scotland's foremost tartan experts, Peter MacDonald, a new tartan was created. Its design is based on the original Government tartan set using a red colour from the little known Band tartan and a black stripe to represent the City of Edinburgh.
The Jubilee tartan was officially launched in June 1999 in time for the 50th Tattoo and the new millennium.
